Learning at our School

As a team, our staff is committed to providing the highest level of education to our students. Class teachers are trained in special education practices and are assisted by a team of highly committed School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs).

Primary school programs place a strong emphasis on the acquisition of communication and numeracy, in addition to developing social and living skills.

High school programs build on these skills and encourage greater community participation and awareness. The development of independence and communication skills are emphasised at all times.

Staff and parents/carers collaboratively develop Individual Learning Programs (ILPs). Outcomes and indicators are selected from the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) at the appropriate stage for each student.

Programs are developed and implemented to meet the specific needs of individual students. Emphasis is placed on age-appropriate learning activities and teaching occurs in appropriate educational and community environments wherever possible.

For K-6 students, curriculum content is based on the following KLAs:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
  • History
  • Science and Technology
  • Creative Arts
  • Geography

Students in Years 7-12 undertake relevant subjects in the Life Skills Curriculum.

Through ILPs students develop knowledge and understanding of both academic and functional activities to provide the necessary skills that will enable them to participate effectively in the wider community.

Integration

Many and varied opportunities exist for the integration of our students into the community and alternative educational settings, forming a vital part of the school’s curriculum.

Integration programs occur at community venues, when shopping or using leisure facilities; at local schools to access and participate in mainstream activities; as well as in our own school environment, with peer support and community service programs.

Extensive community experience ensures our students develop independence and a sense of self-worth in the community.

Resource Support Team

A support team of specialist staff provide direct assistance to teachers in the development and implementation of programs. This team includes English as Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) teachers and SLSOs. Our resource centre contains a variety of learning resources to cater for all students.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a school-wide system of support that includes strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate behaviours to create positive home and school environments.

Holroyd School’s three school rules are ‘we learn’, we care’ and ‘we are safe’. Behaviours to support these are taught explicitly. We teach appropriate behaviours in the same manner we teach academic or life skills to our students.

Transition Education

The transition of students from school to post-school life is an integral part of our program.  Individual Transition Plans (ITPs) are developed and implemented by the school’s transition staff in collaboration with parents and carers.

ITPs focus on preparing students for post-school life, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to live as independently as possible.
