Dear parents and carers,
The last day of term 2 for students is this Friday, 5 July. Term 3 starts for students on Tuesday 23 July.
Your child's school report will be sent home this week. I am thoroughly enjoying reading the reports and learning more about our students' achievements this semester. Please take the time to read the report and celebrate with your child. Their learning is important!
Early next term, you will have the chance to have a brief meeting with your child's teacher to discuss the report. Parent-teacher evening will be held on Tuesday July 30 (term 3, week 2). More information will follow.
Keep an eye out for upcoming events at the Holroyd Community Hub.
We offer ladies-only yoga classes every Thursday (during school terms) from 9.30am to 10.30am. Little ones can participate in singing, story time and craft at playgroup. Anisha from the Community Migrant Resource Centre is there every week too. She can assist you in linking with a range of community services.
Many of our parents have also been taking advantage of our free workshops. These sessions cover a range of topics, with morning tea and child minding provided.
We announce upcoming sessions and other Community Hub news on the Holroyd School Facebook page (you can view our page via the 'Like Us on Facebook' link above).
I wish all our staff and students a happy and healthy winter break.
Until next time,
Anne Flint
Preparations for our end-of-year mega raffle are well underway. Some exceptional prizes have been donated and it's worth everyone's while to purchase a ticket or two. Students will be asked to sell booklets containing ten tickets at $2 each. Those of you keen to sell more are encouraged to request additional booklets. The exciting raffle draw will be held at the school concert in September.
A reminder to parents and friends that free yoga classes continue to be held from 9.30am every Thursday (during school term). The classes are ladies-only, suitable for beginners and in a private room within the Community Hub. Why not join us next term?
Thank you to all the families for their continued support. We could not do it without you.
Until next time,
Gricel Mendez
President

Wheelchair Rugby Championships
Senior students in classes S21, S22, S24 and S30 had a great time at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre this term.
They were among the crowd cheering for the GIO NSW Gladiators at the 2019 Wheelchair Rugby Championships.
Senior students travelled to Hornsby RSL this term to see an imaginative theatre production showcasing performers with disability.
The Symphony of Life - Studio Artes Annual Showcase featured dance, music, drama, film and comedy brilliantly performed by a cast of 90.
All the students in classes S22, S24, S26 and S27 were able to jump, sing and dance along with the performers. Our favourite was the Swamp Dogs rock band!
Studio Artes provides tailor-made creative activities and life skills programs for adults living with a wide-range of disabilities.
Students in J9 and J10 enjoyed a 'healthy eating' discovery tour of the Woolworths store in Merrylands this term.
They had a wonderful time kneading dough to make bread, ringing the bell for the store's butcher and feeling how cold it is in the storage freezer.
The discovery tour ended with a delicious fresh fruit and vegetable platter for the students to share.
Our senior students have kept it cool in term two with ice skating and disco excursions.
The disco, held at John Edmondson Memorial Club in Liverpool, was a hit with students as they danced along to their favourite tunes. Variety provided refreshments - juice and snacks - on the day to ensure that everyone's energy and enthusiasm levels were high.
Senior students certainly did need their energy, as the next day they headed out again - this time to Macquarie Ice Rink at North Ryde. The excursion, again organised by Variety, enabled students to learn some basic ice-skating skills, including balancing and gliding gently on the ice. Penguin chairs enabled students to move safely around the rink with the support of volunteers.
Our sincerest thanks to Variety for these opportunities for our students to have fun in the community. Variety supports children and families facing challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with a disability.
A dental team from Westmead Hospital will be visiting our school on Thursday 22 August.
A permission form will be sent home with students today. Please complete both sides of the form and return to school by Friday 26 July, 2019 (Term 3, Week 1).
This is a great opportunity to check your child's dental health.
In J2 we love looking at family photos, talking about our families and hearing the names of our family members, especially mum and dad! We were all very excited when we used google maps to see images of our own homes!
In our science unit of work this semester, we are learning about the different places and spaces we go to in our local environment. We use a communication board to discuss our weekend travels and also create artworks to showcase the many locations our class mates have visited. Photos and videos are a great tool to help the class understand the purpose of different places in the community.
The highlight of our year has been the Easter Hat Parade - not only did we wear a fancy hat, we were able to see our mums at the parade. There is no doubt that J2 love everything about their families!
Until next time,
Aya, Manaansh, Martin, Luqman, Zayd, Muhammadyusuf, Krista and Lyndal
Students in S19 have been busy participating in a variety of work skill activities this year. This includes collecting recyclable materials, packing boxes, washing dishes, hanging clothes, pegging socks, cartoning eggs, washing windows, as well as packing snack bags and selling them to staff around the school. We also enjoy watering the Holroyd School gardens and look forward to seeing lots of vegetables come spring time.
In the classroom, story art is a favoured activity. This involves listening to a story read by class teacher Acer and then creating interesting related artworks. We also enjoy regular swimming sessions, having fun on the Liberty Swing, song choice and water play during summer.
Until next time,
Johny, Nicholas, Yazen, Jonathan, Hassan, Acer, Jo and Thibaut.
S25 is a senior class that focuses on programs that encourage independence for all class members.
On Mondays we travel to an egg farm and purchase fresh eggs that are then carefully counted and divided into trays to deliver to staff around the school. Each student has a special role in this process that ensures its success.
We also enjoy digging and watering our flourishing class garden. We are proud of our fresh herbs and vegetables such as rocket, silverbeet, kale, lettuce, parsley, mint, broad beans and oregano.
Our paper delivery is also a great opportunity to explore the local community and practise road safety. We also look forward to our swimming program in the hydrotherapy pool.
Our classroom is divided into learning spaces that follow an individual work timetable, teacher instruction area, shared seated area and individual relaxation spaces.
Each student is either following an individual work schedule or learning to manage activities with different levels of teacher assistance depending on learning needs.
Technology plays an important part in our class with the interactive whiteboard and morning circle activities that incorporate PBL lessons and fitness sequences. There is always plenty to do.
Until next time,
Shubhan, Obaid, Murtaza, Ali, Anneliese, Connie and Michelle.
If you have influenza, you will have some or all of these symptoms:
- fever and chills
- headache and muscle aches
- feeling tired and weak
- sneezing, and stuffy or runny nose
- sore throat and cough
Children may also have abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
If your child is unwell, and has any or all of the above symptoms, we encourage you to keep them home from school and consult your family healthcare provider as soon as possible. Your doctor can perform a swab-test to diagnose Influenza A.
If you have influenza, you are likely to get better within a week or so by:
- resting in bed
- taking mild pain killers to relieve your pain
- drinking plenty of liquids
- eating light foods, when you're hungry
In some people, the flu can be severe and lead to serious complications like pneumonia. This is mostly likely to affect people with chronic health problems.
If you are around someone with influenza, you can help avoid getting sick by regularly wiping surfaces they touch (use a cleaning cloth with detergent) and washing your hands.
Wishing all our staff, students and families a safe and happy holiday.
The last day for Term 2 is this Friday, 5 July, 2019.
Term 3 begins on Tuesday 23 July, 2019.
